Architecture and beauty

Sep 1, 2024 | Architecture

I couldn’t start my blog in any other way, but talking about architecture and beauty. These two words summarize much of who I am and how I see the world. The taste for beauty and architecture are two of my hallmarks.

All my life I have been strongly inspired by the world around me. Whether I am in the countryside or in the city, in a natural oasis or in a seemingly ordinary urban space, I always find something beautiful that surprises and moves me.

As an architect, I have the privilege of being able to create beauty, to transform spaces into places that excite, inspire and connect people with their surroundings. My goal is not only to design functional buildings, but also to provoke an emotional connection with the spaces in which one lives, works or enjoys leisure time.

People with a particular sensitivity to beauty, like me, develop a unique ability to capture the essence of each moment and place. We realize that each moment is unrepeatable, and we try to enjoy it to the fullest. The feeling of surprise and admiration that we experience when contemplating a work of art, walking through nature or walking the streets of a city, is something difficult to describe, but something that I would like to share to improve the welfare of society.

Kant said that beauty is the agreement and harmony of the parts in relation to the whole. Beauty is, in essence, harmony and perfection, qualities that inspire admiration and delight. Architecture, for me, is an artistic manifestation that has a profound impact on people’s emotional and psychological well-being. It is not just a technical discipline; it is an art that shapes our experiences and our emotions.

Beauty in architecture is a powerful tool for transmitting emotions and cultural values. It is not limited to the superficial appearance of buildings, but encompasses the harmony of proportions, the relationship between interior and exterior spaces, the quality of materials, and integration with the surroundings. A well-designed building has the power to elicit an immediate emotional response; the purity of modern architecture, with its clean lines and open spaces, can convey a sense of peace and tranquility to the person who discovers it.

Numerous studies have shown that the built environment significantly influences our mood and well-being. Well-designed and beautiful spaces can reduce stress, improve mood and increase productivity.

For example, hospitals that take advantage of natural light and connect with green spaces have shown positive effects on patient recovery. Elements such as natural light, views of the outdoors and the use of appropriate colors contribute significantly to well-being.

Similarly, work environments designed to standards of comfort and beauty can improve employee morale and performance. Well-lit spaces, with good views, in connection with green areas and ergonomic design foster a healthy and pleasant work environment. In this sense, beauty in architecture is not a luxury, but a necessity to improve people’s efficiency and well-being.

In the context of modern urbanism, incorporating beauty into the planning and design of cities is more crucial than ever. With urban sprawl and increased car use, we run the risk of creating impersonal and dehumanized environments. However, through conscious design, it is possible to create urban spaces that promote social cohesion and well-being.

Vegetated architecture, which integrates vegetated spaces into everyday life, is an example of how a balance between urban development and quality of life can be achieved. Architects, as creators of beauty, not only solve technical problems, but also seek to improve the happiness and well-being of society through design.

Bringing architecture and urban beauty closer to people is a great challenge. Buildings, like beauty, have the ability to impact our emotions. In our daily lives, beauty hides in many subtle corners, waiting to be discovered. Looking at the world with the eyes of a discoverer, willing to recognize the surrounding reality, allows us to better relate to our environment. Beauty surrounds and envelops us, and if we are able to admire it, we are truly fortunate.

Beauty is an attitude, a way of seeing and experiencing the world. As David Hume said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and those who fully appreciate it are the truly fortunate ones.

In this blog, I want to explore how architecture can contribute to our well-being, how it can help us reconnect with the beauty of the world around us and how, through design, we can create a more harmonious and beautiful environment for all. I hope you will join me on this journey, discovering together how beauty and architecture can transform our lives in ways we may never have imagined.

In short, architecture is an art form for me, a way to express my love of beauty and to share it with the world. It is a means through which I can contribute to making the world a more beautiful, more harmonious and more livable place. So, if, like me, you have a passion for beauty and architecture, I invite you to follow me on this path, discovering how every space, every corner of the world, has the potential to be a reflection of the beauty and harmony we so long for.
